Philosophy
The winery was founded by the banker Carl Gunderloch in 1890. Riesling was the focus from the very beginning. The grape variety finds an ideal environment on the steep 250-million-year-old red shale cliffs where climatic and geological conditions allow the creation of expressive and unique wines. The heart of the estate is the Rothenberg vineyard in Nackenheim. Sixteen vineyard hectares are currently cultivated with 85% of the vineyard area dedicated to Riesling.
Recently Johannes Hasselbach took over the winery from his parents Agnes and Fritz. He is the 6th Generation winemaker in the Gunderloch family. According to his understanding wine is created in the vineyards. Humans can only accompany the creation process: “It is important to understand that we are in the duty of our vineyards. We try to find the right measures to help the vine to find its natural balance in the given circumstances of the growing season. In our daily work the vineyard is always in the focus. There we create circumstances, which allow us to be very restrictive in our actions and allow our wines to generate their own personal character. Conscientious interaction with nature is an absolute imperative and we treat our vineyards as an irreplaceable treasure."
